xkcd 484 – Flash Games

Posted in Random with tags , , on March 18, 2010 by Ortus

This author is not the world’s biggest xkcd fan, but this is one of my favourites. I don’t own quite the amount of gaming equipment here, but I completely understand the mindset. Click the image to go to the original xkcd post.

Just as an aside, FLASHISM may broaden its horizons into all types of free gaming and other things flash in general. Animations, randomness … anything related really.

Stay tuned.

Second part of the “Colour my …” games review coming next week.

Swedish Armed Forces – Team Test

A brief interlude before I conclude my 2 part “Colour my …” review.

This is a cool little promotional feature on the Swedish Armed Forces website (seriously), that tests your mental faculties with a series of puzzles at increasing speed. You can play with 3 other random anonymous people from elsewhere in the world, or if you have 3 friends in an IM conversation or chat room, then the site allows you to generate a unique private url to share so that you can connect and play with them.

The “Colour my …” Series – Part I

Posted in Games, Platform, Puzzle, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on March 4, 2010 by Ortus

In this monochrome world, I will search the depths of the earth and the limitless skies for you …

This series of games has been submitted to Newgrounds and Armor Games by a contributor called SilverStitch, and seem to have been inspired by a special someone in his life. All together now, d’awwwww. The thing is, I’m actually a little bit in love with the games. They’re not testing in anyway really, but it’s something akin to being inside an interactive poem at times. One man’s beautiful is another’s hackneyed schmaltz, I know that, but I think that there’s really something here. They certainly touched a nerve with me.

There’s 5 total. I’ll write a bit of an intro and look at the first 2 here, and follow up with Part 2 looking at chapters 3, 4 and 5 of the series.

They’re designed in a high contrast sketched out black and white, and as you progress through the games you will find you need to work a little to bring a bit of colour into the world. And that’s a part of the message at work here. The scores to all the games are written by SilverStitch’s apparent collaborator Coin, and they’re perfect. Simple melancholic piano loops that fit so well with the style and intent of the games.

Anyway, let’s look at them. There’s a story at play, so if you’re going to play them, you should probably do it in order. And I would recommend they are played at night, when you are relaxed, with headphones.

Robot Unicorn Attack

Posted in 5 stars, Games, Platform, Simple with tags , , , , , , on March 1, 2010 by Ortus

Robot Unicorn Attack has had nearly 2,000,000 plays since Adult Swim put the game up a few days ago on their website. It has gone massively viral part in thanks to the support of one of the internet’s most notoriously hostile websites, where for one day differences were put aside and the constant bickering ceased to allow them to play this game and be in harmony.

WARNING: may result in unexpected tears of joy.

The typical user reaction to stumbling across Robot Unicorn Attack.

Labuat Flash Curiosity

Posted in Curiosity, Music with tags , , , on June 7, 2009 by Ortus

So. We all got lazy. Time to pick up again.

Labuat are a Spanish music band who I know virtually nothing about, other than I picked up the link to this little flash delight from one of those blogs that trade in the currency of weird and wonderful weblinks.

Fantastic Contraption

Posted in 4 stars, Games, Physics, Puzzle with tags , , , , , on February 9, 2009 by Ortus

I will warn you know, this game has eaten almost every second of my spare time in the last 72 hours. It got under my skin in a way that not many games have before.

What we have here is a physics game. You are presented with an object around which you must construct your Fantastic Contraption from the various tools available to you, making sure that it’s fit to get to the goal zone by negotiating whatever obstacles, puzzles and landscapes that are put in front of you by the devious level designers .

Torture Game

Posted in 4 stars, Curiosity, Games, Gore with tags , , , , , , on December 27, 2008 by Ortus

Right then.

My fellow flashists are clearly a sloth-like bunch of good-for-nothing low lifes, so I bring you this. The Torture Game. The squeamish should look away now, because this isn’t really for the faint hearted. We’re going to take a poor man, initially suspended by two ropes from the ceiling, and we will inflict as much pain and suffering on him as we can.

Without letting him die.

Let’s rock.
